The Gift - a poem in response to privilege and beauty

 Sometimes, there are no words...

A picture was painted for me in the form of an interaction.

Respecting confidentiality means I will not say more.

This poem is my response.

THE GIFT

The face was lined and soft

And at time her eyes flashed bright:

a blue of cloudless days that

once were filled with laughter.

A shuffle of her heavy feet, and two

gnarled, small hands that had

soothed children, friends and faces

long ago.

Clouds now muffled, and garbled

thoughts tumbled out and

many did not stop to care.

She had little, but a lot of time.

And her eyes lit up once more

and she gave all she had –

a broken posy from a bottle,

flowers fading and final

petals about to fall.
